Don C. Hines Rodeo Complex
Through the tremendous efforts of
a multitude of rodeo supporters and sponsors, the UWA Rodeo Complex
was completed in the fall of 1996. In the summer of 1998, the arena
was re-dedicated as the Don C. Hines Rodeo Complex, named in honor
of the former University president. Dr. Hines was instrumental in
bringing the UWA Tiger Wranglers into being. A former professional
rodeo cowboy himself, Dr. Hines often joked about how a bull rider
could end up a university president. "After you've done that," he
said, "You'll do anything!"
The arena is a 260 by 130 foot
state-of-the-art facility designed to accommodate any rodeo or
equestrian event. It is constructed with three-inch drill stem for
posts, top rails and center supports, with bull panels inside the
arena and timed event holding pens. The rough stock holding pens
are constructed with three-inch posts and 2 1/2 inch drill stem for
slats to provide reinforcements.
The rough stock end of the arena
is equipped with eight holding pens and is designed in such a way
that stock can be moved between any two pens at any time. Also,
rough stock can be loaded into chutes from any holding pen Through
the design of the holding-chute system, twelve animals can be loaded
at one time. Six animals can be loaded into the backing chutes and
six others can be loaded into the holding chutes, minimizing delays
between buckouts. A rough stock return system is designed to allow
animals to enter unassisted or assisted.
The timed event end of the arena
includes five holding pens with access to the roping chutes. Also,
the return system is designed to return animals after their use, and
a holding area is provided for waiting participants.
The stables are constructed with
utility poles and a 40-foot truss system. They are designed to
accommodate 36 participant animals, a coach's office, and two
feed/tack storage rooms. Each stable is 12 square feet and
constructed of one and two inch rough cut lumber. The exterior
walls are covered with pine siding and contain a two-foot opening at
the top for ventilation. A six-inch water line has been provided to
the site, along with the installation of a fire plug.
