Assistant Coaches

Assistant Head Coach Tony Oglesby

Tony Oglesby enters the 2009 season, his 13th at West Alabama, with an unparalleled work ethic and a verve for smart, aggressive defense.

He came to UWA in 1997 after a six-year term coaching linebackers and defensive ends at GSC rival West Georgia, where he appeared in the NCAA Division II Playoffs twice. Oglesby also mentored defensive linemen and inside linebackers while serving as co-defensive coordinator at North Greenville Junior College in 1990.

He was a four-time letterman and three-year starter at linebacker for UWA from 1983-86. He remained at UWA to serve as a student assistant from 1987-88 and a graduate assistant in charge of outside linebackers in 1989.

Oglesby had an outstanding prep career at Elberton (Ga.) County High School, earning high school All-State and All-American honors while registering 210 tackles as a senior linebacker.

The Elberton, Ga., native earned a B.S. in Health Education from UWA in 1986.

Offensive Coordinator Will Hall

Will Hall begins his second season as the offensive coordinator at the University of West Alabama. Hall joined the Tigers staff after serving as offensive coordinator at the University of Arkansas at Monticello in 2007.

Hall helped guide the Boll Weevils to the top of the Gulf South Conference in rushing offense and into third place in total offense this past season, while mentoring GSC Freshman of the Year Scott Buisson.

Prior to his stint at UAM, Hall served as Offensive Coordinator at Southwest Baptist University in 2006, and led SBU to 23rd nationally in total offense and 15th in rushing yards per game in Division II. Hall has also had coaching stints at Presbyterian College (S.C.) and Henderson State.

An Amory, Miss.-native, Hall was a standout quarterback at the University of North Alabama, where he was the 2003 Harlon Hill Trophy recipient while leading the Lions to a 13-1 record and the Division II National Quarterfinals. He was named All-American by the Associated Press, Daktronics, Football Gazette and d2football.com, and set 16 school records in his two seasons at UNA. Prior to his playing days at UNA, Hall was a two-time Junior College All-American at Northwest Mississippi Community College, leading the Rangers to a 21-1 record while setting two national NJCAA records for single-season passing with 3,983 yards and 48 touchdowns.

Defensive Coordinator Andy Greening

Andy Greening begins his second season as defensive coordinator for the UWA Football Team. Greening has served as a member of the Northeast Mississippi Community College coaching staff for the past 10 years.

In his first season in Livingston, the Tigers ranked third in the GSC in scoring defense and was fourth in total defense allowing 333 yards per game, as UWA held opponents to just over 24 points per game.

As the head coach at NEMCC, Greening led the Tigers to three Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) North Division Titles (2002, 2004, 2005). In the Hurricane Katrina-shortened 2005 season, Greening coached Northeast to the only undefeated regular season in school history (7-0), a national ranking that climbed as high as number two, and to the Pilgrim’s Pride Bowl Classic in Mount Pleasant, Texas which was the first-ever bowl appearance for a Tiger football team. In 2005 both the offense and defense ranked in the top 20 in the country at season’s end.

Greening, a Corinth, Miss.-native, started coaching at Northeast in 1998 as Defensive Coordinator on Coach Laurin Collins’ staff and served in that capacity for two more seasons under Coach Bobby Hall before taking over as head coach in 2003.

Prior to his stint with the Tigers, Greening was a successful head coach at Booneville High School, Amory High School and Alcorn Central High School. Greening attended NEMCC, where he played football, before receiving a Bachelor of Science degree from Mississippi State University in Health and Physical Education in 1979. He also earned a Masters Degree from MSU in 1984.


Offensive Line Coach Sam Gregg

Sam Gregg begins his second season as the offensive line coach for UWA after serving in the same position at the University of Arkansas at Monticello for one season.

Gregg, a native of Amory, Miss., was a high school teammate of Will Hall at Amory High School and has coached with Hall at UAM and Southwest Baptist University.

In his first season with the Red and White, his offensive line helped Dameon Baylor to becoming one of the top rushers in the GSC, as Baylor gathered 731 yards on the ground. Jon Weinreich, a member of the UWA O-Line, was named to the All-GSC First Team and also received All-Region honors

While at SBU, he helped guide the Bearcat offense to 24th in the nation. Gregg also served as an Offensive Line Assistant at the University of Memphis in 2004. While with UM, the offensive line gave up only five sacks the entire season and earned a trip to the Motor City Bowl in Detroit, Mich.

Gregg’s collegiate career began at Itawamba (MS) Community College under Jay Miller, where he later served as defensive line coach in 2003. He also played at Murray State University from 2000 to 2001 under Joe Pannunzio.

 

Wide Receivers Coach Desmond Lindsey

Desmond Lindsey begins his second season at UWA, as the wide receivers coach. Lindsey, a Taylorsville, Miss. native, served as wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at UAM in 2007.

A former Delta State standout, Lindsey tutored three of the GSC’s top 10 receivers in 2007.

In 2008, Lindsey coached a trio UWA receivers who gathered in over five touchdowns each. The Tigers top five receivers from 2008 all return for the 2009 campaign.

Prior to his stint with the Boll Weevils, Lindsey served as the Wide Receivers Coach at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Perkinston, Miss. While at MCGCC, he helped guide the Bulldogs to the 2005 MACJC South Division Championship, while mentoring two MACJC All-State wide receivers.

Lindsey’s playing career started at Taylorsville (Miss.) High School, where he was a teammate of current Washington Redskins quarterback and former Auburn University standout Jason Campbell and the pair shared one 2A state championships. Lindsey also played two seasons at Jones County Junior College in Ellisville, Miss. before heading to Delta State.

Lindsey participated in the 2009 Bill Walsh NFL Coaches Fellowship Program with the Pittsburgh Steelers under Head Coach Mike Tomlin during Training Camp. Lindsey worked with the wide receivers and special teams units.

Lindsey received his Bachelor’s degree from UWA in 2004 with a B.S. in physical education. He has completed his Master’s degree at UWA in 2009 with a MAT in physical education.

Running Backs Coach Scott Harper

Scott Harper begins his third season coaching at West Alabama after several years of college and professional playing experience.

He began his collegiate career at Gulf Coast Community College in Perkinston, Mississippi. After two seasons with the Bulldogs, he transferred to Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia and was a lineman on the Thudering Herds’ 1999 and 2000 Mid-American Conference championship teams.

After one season in the National Football League, he moved to Canada and played two seasons in the Candian Football League with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

In his spare time, he volunteered at Foley High School in Foley, Alabama, during the 2006 season assisting the coaching staff.

Scott recieved his undergraduate degree in criminal justice from Marshall and he is currently working towards his Master’s Degree at UWA.

Tight Ends Coach Robert Herring

Robert Herring enters his third season at UWA, where he has coached wide receivers and tight ends.

Herring, a graduate of Oxford High School in Oxford, Ala., where he was a member of the 1989 State Championships team, comes to Livingston after serving as the offensive coordinator at Shelby County High School in Birmingham for his younger brother Ryan.

Herring attended the University of Alabama before returning to his alma mater in 1995 to coach the Yellow Jacket quarterbacks. Herring left OHS in 2000 to become the wide receivers coach at Newnan High School in Newnan, Ga, where he stayed until 2004.

Herring’s father, Robert, is a member of the Alabama High School Hall of Fame after winning three State Championships at Oxford High School.

Defensive Backs Coach Derek Hill

Derek Hill begins his first season as defensive backs coach for the UWA football team.

Hill joins the Tiger staff after serving for one season as the defensive backs coach for the Georgia Mustangs of the North American Football League.

Coach Hill brings 23 years of coaching experience and five National Championships to Livingston, with the most recent title occurring in 1998 at Florida A&M University. The Morris Brown alum also served on three consecutive National Championship staffs at the University of North Alabama from 1993 through 1995 under current UWA Head Coach Bobby Wallace, and was on the Central State (OH) University staff that claimed the 1990 NAIA Division I National Championship. While at CSU, the defensive backfield led the nation in interceptions in 1988 and 1989.

Prior to coaching with the Mustangs last season, Hill coached two seasons at Eastside High School in Covington, Ga., serving as defensive backs coach. Coach Hill has also spent time at Morehouse College, Southeast Missouri State and as a graduate assistant at the University of Illinois.

Hill, who was elected to the Morris Brown Hall of Fame in 1989, has coached 12 players that have gone on to play professionally.

Student Assistant Coach Mike McCarty

Michael McCarty begins his second season as a member of the UWA staff serving as the tight ends coach and the video coordinator. McCarty started his coaching career with the Tigers working with the quarterbacks under the guidance of UWA Offensive Coordinator Will Hall.

McCarty began his playing career at Troy University, where he played wide receiver for the Trojans from 2001-2004 before transferring to Livingston in 2006, where he was a member of Bobby Wallace’s first team at UWA.

McCarty is a 2001 graduate of Sumiton Christian High School, where he finished his prep career with 3,200 yards receiving. McCarty, a native of Birmingham, Ala., completed his Bachelor of Science degree at UWA in 2008 in sports management, he is currently working toward his Masters in physical education.

Student Assistant Coach Sam Mosley

Sam Mosley begins his first season as a member of the UWA coaching staff after a four year, playing career with the Tigers.

Mosley helped anchor the UWA offensive line in his last three seasons after playing tight end his first season. The Camden, Ala.-native played in 42 games for the Tigers as a mainstay in the starting lineup.

Prior to UWA, Mosley played for Head Coach Chris Barford at Wilcox Academy (Ala.), where helped guide the Wildcats to a 35-13 four-year, prep-career record. During his prep career he was named All-State, All-Metro, All-Star MVP and Super Senior.

Student Assistant Coach Chris McCrory

Chris McCrory begins his first season as a member of the UWA coaching staff.

McCrory earned his Bachelor of Science in secondary education in the spring semester of 2008 from the University of Mississippi. McCrory served as a student assistant for the Rebels.

Prior to his years at Ole Miss, McCrory attened Itawamba Community College in Fulton, Miss. McCrory is a 2003 graduate of Amory High School was he was a kicker for the Panther football team.
