PENSACOLA, Fla. – The
University of West Alabama
volleyball team opened the 2008
campaign with sweeps over UNC
Pembroke and Gulf South
Conference foe Ouachita Baptist
on the opening day of the West
Florida Comfort Inn-vitational
in Pensacola, Fla.
UWA opened the season by
blanking UNCP, 3-0 (27-25,
25-17, 25-14). With the win,
the Red and White have secured
season lid lifter wins in three
of the last four seasons and
moved to 9-6 in season openers
since 1994. The Tigers have
notched sweeps in eight of the
nine wins. A trio of Tigers
posted double figure kill
totals, led by senior Allison
Nail, a pre-season All- Gulf
South Conference selection. The
Cullman, Ala.-native finished
the UNCP tilt with a match-high
14 kills and was one dig shy of
her 26th career
double-double. Juniors Ana
Gabriela Pedrosa and Jessica
Crook each recorded 11 kills.
Playing in her first
intercollegiate match, freshman
Alexis McHale collected 42
assists in the match.
In the nightcap, The Tigers
staved off the Purple and Gold
of OBU in three tightly
contested sets. UWA held off
OBU 25-21 in the first and third
sets and topped OBU 25-20 in the
second set. Pedrosa followed up
her 11 kill performance in the
morning session with a 14 kill,
11 dig, double-double
performance against OBU. Nail
and Crook each carded ten kills
in the victory. Nail and
Pedrosa combined for nine
service aces in the contest.
Senior Jacquie Swan inched
closer to the 1,000-career dig
mark with her nine kills total
on Friday. The Mobile,
Ala.-native needs just nine digs
to surpassed the 1,000-career
digs mark.
The Tigers
close out the event on Saturday
with a pair of matches at 1:30
p.m. and 6:30 p.m., squaring off
with Florida Tech and St.
Joseph’s (Ind.). Live stats
