LIVINGSTON, Ala. –After
opening the 2008 season last
weekend at the West Florida
Comfort Inn-vitational, the
University of West Alabama
volleyball team will host the
University of Arkansas at
Monticello in the home debut for
the Tigers. The tilt between
the two Gulf South Conference
institutions is set for 5 p.m.
at Pruitt Hall.
UWA posted a 2-2 mark down in
Pensacola, Fla. last weekend,
blanking North Carolina Pembroke
and Ouachita Baptist on the
first day and suffering setbacks
to Florida Tech and St. Joseph’s
(Ind.) on Saturday. Junior Ana
Gabriela Pedrosa paced the Red
and White offensive attack,
recording 59 kills in the four
matches played in the
season-opening weekend. The
Belo Horizonte, Brazil-native
turned in double figure kills in
all four matches and tallied
double-doubles against OBU and
SJC. Senior Allison Nail also
registered double figure kill
totals in all four matches.
Jessica Crook, who suffered an
injury against Florida Tech,
carded 36 kills in the three
matches played. The Ohatchee,
Ala. junior was named to the UWF
Comfort Inn-vitational
All-Tournament Team.
Thursday’s home opener will be
the first of five matches played
over a 72-hour span. The Tigers
will trek to Huntsville, Ala. on
Friday to take part in the
Alabama in Huntsville
Invitational. UWA will face the
University of Puerto Rico Rio
Piedras and Christian Brothers
University on the opening day.
Saturday’s schedule includes
Francis Marion at 9 a.m. and
Harding at 1 p.m.
The Cotton Blossoms enter the
contest with a 4-1 mark, having
won on Tuesday night in
Monticello against Wiley
College. UAM won two matches
last weekend in Florence, S.C.
The UWA-UAM affair will be the
first athletic contest on the
newly renovated Pruitt Hall
floor. The new hardwood
features the
extra
large
scripting of
“TIGERS” at the midcourt
area along with red baselines
and boundaries. The floor was
designed and
will
be
installed
by AGF Incorporated
of Birmingham, Ala.
The home lid lifter will be
available on UWA’s athletic web
site – athletics.uwa.edu for
live stats. The University of
West Alabama fans are reminded
that live video and audio
streaming of Tiger football,
volleyball and men’s and women’s
basketball will be available
this year on B2 Networks.
