JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The
University of West Alabama volleyball team moved to 8-0
on the season after claiming wins over Alderson-Broaddus
College and Augusta State on Saturday at the Carson
Newman Labor Day Tournament. The unblemished start by
the Tigers is the best in school history.
UWA swept the Battlers of ABC 30-21,
30-27 and 30-22 in Saturday’s opening match. The Tigers
had two players post double figures in kills against ABC
with junior Allison Nail’s 16 kills and sophomore Ana
Gabriela Pedrosa registering 12 in the match. Pedrosa
also finished with two service aces in the three-game
sweep. Teresa Clements added nine kills while sophomore
setter carded 37 assists in the victory.
“The 8-0 start is a testament to the
hard work that began last year,” said head volleyball
coach Ron Arenz. “I’m proud of the way we have
started. We are getting better match-by-match.
Against the Jaguars
of ASU, the Tigers fell behind 1-0 after dropping the
first game 30-22, but rebounded to win the next three
games 30-20, 30-23 and 30-17. Nail had a match-high 25
kills. The Cullman, Ala.-product added 17 digs on the
defensive side. Pedrosa tallied a double-double with 17
kills and 13 digs. Sophomore Jessica Crook posted nine
kills in addition to her six total blocks. Junior
Jessica Swan led the Red and White in digs with 33 in
the four-games.
"Being on the road
for the first two weeks has been tough, so we are
looking forward to playing in front of our home crowd on
Wednesday night,” added Arenz.
UWA opens the home schedule on
Wednesday, Sept. 5 against Spring Hill College at Pruitt
Hall. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. Admission to all
home volleyball matches is free.
