LIVINGSTON, Ala. —The No. 25
University of West Alabama
volleyball team suffered its
first loss of the season to West
Florida 3-1 on Friday night in
front of 731 at Pruitt Hall.
The match was
tabbed as the Gulf South
Conference Match of the Week and
it held up to its billing. UWA,
riding an 18-match winning
streak came out of the gates to
claim the opening game 30-25.
The Argonauts rebounded from the
opening setback to even the
match at one game apiece with a
30-24 victory. The momentum
continued to favor the visitors
from Pensacola, Fla. in the
pivotal third game as they
topped the Red and White 30-25.
The finale was a back and fourth
affair with both teams battling
tooth and nail for the
advantage. The Tigers looked to
close out game four with a 29-27
lead, but UWF claimed the final
four points to win the match and
stay undefeated in GSC Eastern
Division play.
The Tigers
(18-1, 4-1 GSC) finished with
three players in double figures
in the kill column. Sophomore
Ana Gabriela Pedrosa led the UWA
charge with 18 kills. Junior
Allison Nail registered 15 kills
in the contest. Jessica Crook
added 12 in the setback.
Guiliana De Francesco posted a
double-double with 49 assists
and recording 15 digs.
UWF (20-2,
5-0 GSC) was led by Isabela
Gualberto, who carded a
match-high 19 kills. Luciana
Rapach and Kimberly Clark posted
18 and 16 kills respectively.
The Red and
White will host Valdosta State
on Saturday in a match slated to
begin at 1 p.m. at Pruitt Hall
on the UWA campus.
