LIVINGSTON, Ala. — Four
University of West Alabama
volleyball players finished in
double figures in kills, but it
wasn’t enough as the Tigers dropped
a thrilling five-set Gulf South
Conference match Friday night to
West Florida, 3-2, at Pruitt Hall.
The Tigers (9-22 overall, 1-10 GSC)
kept all five games close, losing
the opening one to the Argonauts,
30-28. But West Alabama’s offense
was just warming up, as the Tigers
trailed for most of the second game,
until freshman Jessica Cook, who had
10 kills and six total blocks, gave
West Alabama a 29-27 lead on a kill.
West Florida (17-13, 8-3) rallied to
tie the game at 30, but back-to-back
kills by sophomore Allison Nail gave
the Tigers a 32-30 victory to tie
the match at 1.
In the third, West Alabama jumped
out to a 14-8 lead, only to watch it
slip away as West Florida tied the
game at 24, but a Nail kill gave the
Tigers momentum and with sophomore
Teresa Clements’ kill, West Alabama
grabbed a 2-1 match advantage with a
30-28 victory. But the Argonauts
battled back in the fourth, as there
were eight ties before forcing a
deciding game with a 30-25 win.
In the final game, there were six
ties and two lead changes, with West
Florida breaking a 12-all tie and
scoring the final three points to
win 15-12.
Nail led the West Alabama offense
with 23 kills and 14 digs, while
hitting .463. Clements added 19
kills and senior Elizabeth Colley
had 11 kills, six block assists,
five service aces, while hitting
.421. Freshman Giuliana De Francesco
had a career-high 59 assists, with
14 digs. Sophomore Jacquie Swan,
named GSC East Division Player of
the Week Tuesday, finished with 20
digs, while junior Taylor Borunda
added 11.
Carly Moyers and Naiara Fernandes
paced West Florida with 17 and 16
kills, respectively. Marcela Cunha
had 28 assists, while Melina Pereira
finished with 21. Jerica Carter
added 19 assists.
The Tigers, now 0-3 in five-set
matches, finished with 74 kills and
19 errors, while West Florida had 63
kills and 14 errors.
West Alabama concludes its season
1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 28
against Valdosta State University at
Pruitt Hall.
