Tigers drop thriller to West Florida

LIVINGSTON, Ala. — Four University of West Alabama volleyball players finished in double figures in kills, but it wasn’t enough as the Tigers dropped a thrilling five-set Gulf South Conference match Friday night to West Florida, 3-2, at Pruitt Hall.

The Tigers (9-22 overall, 1-10 GSC) kept all five games close, losing the opening one to the Argonauts, 30-28. But West Alabama’s offense was just warming up, as the Tigers trailed for most of the second game, until freshman Jessica Cook, who had 10 kills and six total blocks, gave West Alabama a 29-27 lead on a kill. West Florida (17-13, 8-3) rallied to tie the game at 30, but back-to-back kills by sophomore Allison Nail gave the Tigers a 32-30 victory to tie the match at 1.

In the third, West Alabama jumped out to a 14-8 lead, only to watch it slip away as West Florida tied the game at 24, but a Nail kill gave the Tigers momentum and with sophomore Teresa Clements’ kill, West Alabama grabbed a 2-1 match advantage with a 30-28 victory. But the Argonauts battled back in the fourth, as there were eight ties before forcing a deciding game with a 30-25 win.

In the final game, there were six ties and two lead changes, with West Florida breaking a 12-all tie and scoring the final three points to win 15-12.

Nail led the West Alabama offense with 23 kills and 14 digs, while hitting .463. Clements added 19 kills and senior Elizabeth Colley had 11 kills, six block assists, five service aces, while hitting .421. Freshman Giuliana De Francesco had a career-high 59 assists, with 14 digs. Sophomore Jacquie Swan, named GSC East Division Player of the Week Tuesday, finished with 20 digs, while junior Taylor Borunda added 11.

The Tigers, now 0-3 in five-set matches, finished with 74 kills and 19 errors, while West Florida had 63 kills and 14 errors.

West Alabama concludes its season 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 28 against Valdosta State University at Pruitt Hall.
