AUGUSTA, Ga. —
The University of
West Alabama volleyball team
completed a weekend sweep at
the Augusta (Ga.) State
University Jaguar Classic,
blanking Coker College
(30-10, 30-21, 30-16) and
Mount Olive College (30-21,
30-21, 30-14).
With the four wins this
weekend, the Tigers are off
to the best start to the
season since 2001. That
season, UWA ran off six
straight wins to open the
campaign.
The Tigers (4-0) were led by
junior Allison Nail in both
matches on Saturday. The
Cullman, Ala.-product
registered back-to-back 17
kill performances. In the
morning match against the
Cobras of CC, she posted
double figures in digs and
kills. Rafaella Maranhao
added 10 kills in the first
match. Junior Jacquie Swan
registered a team-high 14
digs and recorded four aces.
“It was a good weekend for
us,” said UWA head coach Ron
Arenz. “We exercised
control all weekend. This
was a good confidence
booster as we look toward
the Gulf South Conference
season.”
Against the Trojans of MOC,
sophomore Jessica Crook
posted nine kills behind
Nail’s team-high 17.
Sophomore Giuliana De
Francesco combined for 69
assists in the two matches
on Saturday. Ana Gabriela
Pedrosa finished the second
match with eight kills and
seven aces.
UWA will continue its
tournament trail next
weekend, Aug. 31-Sept. 1,
participating in the
Carson-Newman Tournament in
Jefferson
City, Tenn. The Tigers will
take on Tusculum in the
opening match of the event.
