AUGUSTA, Ga. — The University of West Alabama volleyball team completed a weekend sweep at the Augusta (Ga.) State University Jaguar Classic, blanking Coker College (30-10, 30-21, 30-16) and Mount Olive College (30-21, 30-21, 30-14).

With the four wins this weekend, the Tigers are off to the best start to the season since 2001.  That season, UWA ran off six straight wins to open the campaign.

The Tigers (4-0) were led by junior Allison Nail in both matches on Saturday.  The Cullman, Ala.-product registered back-to-back 17 kill performances.  In the morning match against the Cobras of CC, she posted double figures in digs and kills.  Rafaella Maranhao added 10 kills in the first match.  Junior Jacquie Swan registered a team-high 14 digs and recorded four aces.

“It was a good weekend for us,” said UWA head coach Ron Arenz.  “We exercised control all weekend.  This was a good confidence booster as we look toward the Gulf South Conference season.”

Against the Trojans of MOC, sophomore Jessica Crook posted nine kills behind Nail’s team-high 17.  Sophomore Giuliana De Francesco combined for 69 assists in the two matches on Saturday.  Ana Gabriela Pedrosa finished the second match with eight kills and seven aces.

UWA will continue its tournament trail next weekend, Aug. 31-Sept. 1, participating in the Carson-Newman Tournament in Jefferson City, Tenn.  The Tigers will take on Tusculum in the opening match of the event.  Match time is slated for 11:15 CST.
