LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The
University of West Alabama
Athletic Department announced
the 2008 Tiger Volleyball
schedule Wednesday afternoon.
First year head coach Nathan
Baker will guide his squad
through a 33-match regular
season slate, highlighted by ten
home matches at Pruitt Hall on
the UWA campus. The home opener
for the Red and White is slated
for Sept. 4 against Gulf South
Conference West Division foe
Arkansas at Monticello. Baker’s
troops will kick off the season
on Aug. 29-30, participating in
the University of West Florida
tournament in Pensacola, Fla.
UWA will open the two-day event
with University of North
Carolina at Pembroke and
Ouachita Baptist followed by
matches with Florida Tech and
Saint Josephs College out of
Indiana the following day. The
UWF tournament is the first of
three for UWA on the season as
it will take part in the
University of Alabama in
Huntsville event on Sept. 5-6
along with a trip to
Greeneville, Tenn. for the
Tusculum College Tournament. It
will be a return trip to TC for
Baker as he came to Livingston
after spending two seasons as
head coach for the Pioneer
volleyball program.
The schedule includes three
straight GSC home matches
against Valdosta State, West
Florida and Montevallo. UWA
closes out the home campaign
against Martin Methodist College
on Nov. 4. The 2008 GSC
Tournament will be hosted by the
East Division Champion.
UWA is coming off its best
season in the program’s history,
recording a 27 wins and
shattering the record for
consecutive wins with 18 to
start the season a year ago.
The squad earned a Top 25
national ranking during the
season and registered a spot in
the GSC Tournament with an 8-4
mark in conference play. The
Tigers return eight players from
last year’s team, including
All-Conference and All-Region
performer Allison Nail.
