CLINTON, Miss. — The University of West
Alabama tennis teams split with Mississippi
College on Saturday on the MC campus. The
UWA women claimed a 6-3 win while the Tigers
fell 6-3 in the men’s match.
The UWA
women, who clinched a berth in the Gulf
South Conference Tournament on Tuesday,
moved to 15-9 on the season after posting
back-to-back wins this week. Nicole
Shanahan fought back in her match after
dropping the first set 6-4; she turned in a
6-1 win in the second set and clinched the
point in the third set tiebreaker. Mariana
Freitas and Brittany Williams both swept
their matches, 6-0, 6-0. Chenge Tsapayi won
in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. In doubles, the
No. 1 tandem of Shanahan and Williams won
8-2 while the UWA duo of Freitas and Change
blanked MC 8-0.
In the
men’s match, UWA’s (12-10) Brandon Harris
notched a win at No. 3, winning 6-3, 6-4.
Lucas Nunes pushed his match to a third set
tiebreaker after falling 6-3 in the opening
set and earned a 6-1 second set win. He
posted a team point with his win in the
third and deciding set. The Tiger pairing
of Harris and Wes Yarnton won in doubles
with an 8-3 win.
The UWA netters close out
the regular season with a GSC match with
North Alabama. The match has been moved to
Thursday, April 17, on the campus of UNA.
Match time is set for 3 p.m.
