AMERICUS, Ga. --
The University of West Alabama netters each
picked up two wins on Saturday, as the men
continued its string of consecutive wins,
seven, with a 5-4 victory against Georgia
Southwestern and 9-0 win over Fort Valley
State. The UWA women also improved its
record, winning their fifth-straight with a
5-4 win also over the Hurricanes and then a
9-0 sweep of FVSU.
In singles, the Tigers
took five of the six contests to claim the
win. Wes Yarton claimed a 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 win
over Brenton Hochsteler at the #2 singles
spot. Brandon Harris followed with a 6-4,
6-3 victory at the #3 spot. Carlin Tighe won
at #4 over Brandon Hochsteler 6-2, 1-6, 6-4
while James Gardner (7-5, 6-3) and Lucas
Nunes (7-5, 6-2) each claimed contests to
lift the Tigers to the 5-4 win. All three
UWA doubles teams fell in action.
On the women’s side, the
UWA doubles team of Brittany Williams and
Nicole Shanahan claimed the only doubles
point for the Tigers, winning 8-1 at the #2
spot. In singles action, the Red and White
picked up victories from Shanahan at the #1
(3-6, 7-5, 6-1), Chenge Tsapayi at #3 (6-1,
6-1), #4 Williams (7-5, 6-1) and #6 Rachel
Hardaway (6-2, 3-6, 6-0) to earn the 5-4
match win.
The UWA men return to
action on Tuesday, Feb. 26, hosting
Morehouse at 1 p.m. The UWA women return to
action on Saturday, March, as they host
Arkansas Tech at 10 a.m.
