TOUGALOO, Miss. – The University of West
Alabama men’s and women’s tennis teams
opened the 2008 season by defeating Tougaloo
University on Friday afternoon. The UWA men
blanked the Bulldogs 9-0 with the Tiger
women picking up a 6-3 victory over TC.
In men’s
singles, #1 singles Wesley Yarten defeated
Kahil Peetes 6-0, 6-0. #2 Lucas Nunez
defeated Meshock Barker 6-1, 6-0 as #3
Denton Meintjes turned back Cody Pines 6-0,
6-0. Brandon Harris, playing the #4 singles
position, defeated Steve Garnett 6-0, 6-0
while James Gardner and Lucas Cruz each
claimed 6-0, 6-0 wins as well.
The men’s
#1 doubles team of Gardner and Yarten
claimed an 8-0 win over Peetes and Kohn. The
#2 doubles team of Meintjes and Harris won
8-0 over Barker and Garnett with Carlin
Tighe and Cruz winning 8-0 against Pines and
Thames.
On the
women’s side, the #1 doubles team of Mariana
Freitas and Brittany Williams defeated
Rukaya Venja and Eleysia Perkins 8-5, while
Rachel Hardaway and Amanda Morgan defeated
Jasmine Woods and Charity Foster 8-6.
In singles
action, Freitas downed Venja 6-3, 6-4 at the
#1 position. Williams blanked Cillora Hicks
6-0, 6-0. Amanda Morgan, at #3, turned back
Perkins 6-4, 6-1 with Rachel Hardway
blanking Woods 6-0, 6-0. Allison Nail lost
to Foster 6-0, 6-3.
West
Alabama returns to action on Saturday,
February 9, as the Tigers face Jackson State
at 10 a.m. and Belhaven at 2:30 p.m.
