The University of West Alabama men’s and
women’s tennis team received some national
recognition, as the Tigers were both ranked
in the Fila Intercollegiate Tennis
Association’s South Region rankings.
The UWA
women are one of nine teams from the Gulf
South Conference ranked in the region, as
the Tigers stand in 10th place.
The top six spots are headed by schools from
the conference, headlined by Valdosta State
with defending conference champion, West
Florida in second. Delta State stands in
third with Harding, North Alabama and
Henderson State completing the top six. UAH
and Montevallo round out the conference
schools in the rankings, as the Lady
Chargers stand in eighth with the Lady
Falcons in ninth. Clark Atlanta, the only
non-conference school in the rankings, is
ranked seventh.
On the men’s
side, the Tigers are one of seven teams from
the GSC in the ITA region rankings, slotted
in seventh. Defending conference champion,
Valdosta State, holds the top spot, as West
Florida is ranked second. Ouachita Baptist
is third in the rankings with North Alabama,
Delta State and Harding all following suit.
UAH rounds out the GSC schools in ninth.
Rounding out the rankings are Morehouse in
eighth and Fort Valley State in 10th.
West Alabama
opens the 2008 slate on Friday, February 8,
as the Tiger tennis programs travel to
Tougaloo, Miss. to face the Tougaloo
Bulldogs at 1:00 p.m. UWA’s first home match
is scheduled for Saturday, February 16
against Pfeiffer at 10:00 a.m. and then
Martin Methodist at 2:00 p.m.
