LIVINGSTON, Ala. — Both University of
West Alabama tennis teams were ranked in the
first official NCAA Regional tennis
rankings, released by the intercollegiate
governing body on Thursday. The UWA women
are listed sixth and the Tiger men enter the
poll in the seventh spot in the South
Region.
Led by
first-year head coach Glen Fanelli, the
women’s squad has a 5-2 mark within the
region. UWA notched its 12th
overall win of the season in women’s action
with a 6-3 decision over Mississippi
College. The Red and White are joined by
Gulf South Conference members Valdosta
State, West Florida, Delta State, North
Alabama, Harding, Alabama in Huntsville,
Arkansas Tech and Montevallo. The GSC owns
nine of the ten spots in the poll. The
Blazers of VSU is the top-ranked team in the
region.
On the
men’s side, the Tigers are 3-2 in region
competition. UWA moved to 10-9 on the
campaign after blanking MC 9-0 at the Howard
R. Vaughan Tennis Complex on the Livingston
campus. The VSU men are also atop the
initial rankings along with UWA, UWF, Ouachita
Baptist, UNA, DSU, HU and UAH.
Playing
a demanding schedule, the two squads
combined have played 20 teams that are
ranked in their respective regions.
UWA returns to the home
courts on Saturday, April 5 with a double
dip day, hosting Columbus State and
Belhaven. The first match is scheduled to
get underway at 9 a.m.
