Tiger Tennis Ranked In NCAA Regional Ranking

LIVINGSTON, Ala. — Both University of West Alabama tennis teams were ranked in the first official NCAA Regional tennis rankings, released by the intercollegiate governing body on Thursday.  The UWA women are listed sixth and the Tiger men enter the poll in the seventh spot in the South Region.

Led by first-year head coach Glen Fanelli, the women’s squad has a 5-2 mark within the region.  UWA notched its 12th overall win of the season in women’s action with a 6-3 decision over Mississippi College.  The Red and White are joined by Gulf South Conference members Valdosta State, West Florida, Delta State, North Alabama, Harding, Alabama in Huntsville, Arkansas Tech and Montevallo.  The GSC owns nine of the ten spots in the poll.  The Blazers of VSU is the top-ranked team in the region.

On the men’s side, the Tigers are 3-2 in region competition.  UWA moved to 10-9 on the campaign after blanking MC 9-0 at the Howard R. Vaughan Tennis Complex on the Livingston campus.  The VSU men are also atop the initial rankings along with UWA, UWF, Ouachita Baptist, UNA, DSU, HU and UAH.

Playing a demanding schedule, the two squads combined have played 20 teams that are ranked in their respective regions.

UWA returns to the home courts on Saturday, April 5 with a double dip day, hosting Columbus State and Belhaven.  The first match is scheduled to get underway at 9 a.m.
