LIVINGSTON, Ala. —
Both University of West Alabama tennis teams
returned to the home courts with wins over
Mississippi College on Wednesday at the
Howard R. Vaughan Tennis Complex on the UWA
campus. The UWA men blanked the Choctaws
9-0 while the Tiger women topped MC 6-3.
On the women’s side,
UWA’s Nicole Shanahan ousted MC’s Sarah
Spraberry 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1. On court three,
Chenge Tsapayi of UWA topped Andrea Boyles
6-0, 6-1. Mariana Freitas dropped MC’s
Emily Newman 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2. The Red and
White notched the win with Brittany
William’s 8-6 win over Sydney Moak. UWA
claimed two of the three tightly contested
doubles matches. The Tiger tandem of
Williams and Shanahan staved off MC’s
pairing of Spraberry and Newman, 9-7. UWA’s
duo of Freitas and Tsapayi claimed an 8-6
win over Boyles and Moak of MC, 8-6.
In the men’s match,
Denton Meintjes won in straight sets 6-0,
6-2 over MC’s Chas Dunn at the No. 1
position. UWA’s Brandon Harris and Carlin
Tighe each notched wins at No2 and No. 3
respectively. Harris and Tighe clinched the
matches with 7-5 wins in the second set.
Lucas Cruz, Lucas Nunes and Wes Yarnton all
won super tie-breaker matches. In doubles,
the UWA pairing of Harris and Yarnton turned
back MC’s Dunn and Patrick Stanton on court
one. The Tiger tandem of Nunes and Meintjes
along with UWA’s Cruz and Tighe each won on
their respective courts.
UWA returns to the courts
on Saturday, April 5, welcoming Columbus
State at 9 a.m. and Belhaven at 2 p.m.
