LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The West Alabama
netters continued their hot start with a
sweep of Martin Methodist College in men’s
and women’s tennis activity Saturday at the
Howard R. Vaughn Tennis Complex on the UWA
campus.
The
Tiger men extended their win streak to 4-0
to start the 2008 campaign with an 8-1 win
over the Redhawks of Martin Methodist. UWA
claimed all three doubles matches and turned
in five singles wins. At court No. 1, UWA’s
Denton Meintjes split the first two sets.
7-5, 4-6 against MMC’s Melvin Prada and
claimed the point with a 6-4 win in the
third set. Wesley Yarton was stretched to
three sets against the Redhawk’s Thiago
Dualilon, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. Brandon Harris and
James Gardner secured the UWA win with
victories at No. 4 and No. 6 respectively.
On the
women’s side, UWA moved to 3-1 on the season
with a 5-4 win over the Redhawk women. The
two squads split the first two doubles point
at No 1 and No. 2 while the Tigers won at
No. 3 by default. Freshman Mariana Freitas
turned back MMC’s Flora de la Garza 6-1, 6-2
at No. 2. UWA’s Brittany Williams topped
Allison Winters 6-1, 6-0. Teresa Clements
of UWA won by default in singles
competition.
Both squads return to
action with a midweek road tilt with
Stillman College on Tuesday, Feb. 19. Match
time is set 2 p.m.
