JACKSON, Miss.
—The University of West Alabama men’s tennis
team picked up two more wins on Saturday,
knocking off NCAA Division I opponent,
Jackson State and topped Belhaven in the
afternoon match. The UWA Women split
matches on the day, falling to JSU but
rebounded to turn back Belhaven.
UWA knocked off JSU 6-3
to start the day and blanked BC 9-0 in the
afternoon session, while the Red and White
women suffered a 5-2 setback to the Tigers
of JSU and turned back BC 4-3.
The Tigers won all three
double positions by the identical score of
8-1 in the Belhaven match. At the No 1.
position, the tandem of Denton Meintjes and
Brandon Harris breezed by the Belhaven duo
of Gabrielle Prado and Josh Strickland while
Wesley Yarnton and James Gardner topped
JSU’s Alex Grubbs and Papps Murove. The
third point in the doubles came by way of
UWA’s pair of Lucas Cruz and Carlin Tighe
win over Harris Bradston and Jim
Strickland. Highlighting the men’s singles
were 6-0, 6-0 wins by UWA’s Wesley Yarton
and Carlin Tighe over BC’s Murove and
Strickland respectively.
On the women’s side, the
match was clinched by sophomore Amanda
Morgan’s win on court No. 3, she topped
Belhaven’s Lindsey Berg in straight sets
6-2, 6-0. UWA won two singles matched by
default and one doubles match by default.
In the JSU match, Rachael Hardaway picked up
a win at the No. 5 singles spot, defeating
JSU’s Daniela Primental 6-1, 6-3.
The Tiger netters will
open the home season on Feb. 16, hosting
Martin Methodist at 2 p.m. at the Howard R.
Vaughn Tennis Complex on the UWA campus.
