FLORENCE, Ala. – Both University of West
Alabama tennis teams dropped the regular
season finale, falling to Gulf South
Conference rival North Alabama on Thursday.
The Tiger men suffered a 6-3 setback while
the UWA women fell 8-1 to UNA. The UWA
netters will now compete in the GSC Tennis
Championships that will be contested this
weekend in Montgomery, Ala.
In the
men’s match, UWA picked up a pair of wins in
singles and claimed one point in doubles
competition. At No. 2, Carlin Tighe turned
back UNA’s Zac Bereznicki 7-5, 6-1. UWA’s
Lucas Nunez blanked Phil Collins of UNA,
6-0, 6-0. The Tiger duo of Tighe and
Brandon Harris topped the Lion’s duo of
Collins and Martin Siejka, 8-2.
UWA’s
lone point in the women’s contest came from
Chenge Tsapayi on court three. Tsapayi won
the first set 6-4 over UNA’s Mallory Waites
but fell 7-5 in the second set to force a
tie-breaker set, which Tsapayi claimed 10-4.
The
2008 edition of the GSC Tennis Championships
will get underway on Saturday, April 19, at
Lagoon Park.
