Butch Stafford
Basketball
(1968-1972)
Butch Stafford, a native of
Alexandria, Ind., played basketball for West Alabama from
1968-1972. He scored 1,143 career points for the Tigers, and was
selected the GSC Player of the Year and an All-American in
1971-72. He helped lead the Tigers to the Alabama Collegiate
Conference Championship in 1969-70 and 1970-71, and was the ACC
Tournament MVP in 1971. He later became a high school coach at
Eufaula High School and Highland High School in Anderson,
Indiana. He led Eufaula to a State Championship in 1978, and had
a 39-8 record in two years at Highland High School.

Charlie Thompson
Track and Field
(1967-1971)
Charlie
Thompson, a native of Birmingham, Ala., was the first member of
the West Alabama track team to be named an All-American, earning
the honor in 1970 after finishing second in the nation in the
triple jump at the NAIA National Meet. He led UWA to the 1969
ACC Championship and was the captain of the track team from
1968-70, leading the Tigers in scoring all three years. Thompson
later competed for a position in the 1972 Olympic Track and
Field teams and the 1971 Pan American Games. |
