LIVINGSTON, Ala. –
The University of West Alabama Athletic Department has announced the
hiring of Tony Schmidt as Assistant Sports Information Director at UWA,
effective August 13th.
Schmidt, the fifth
recipient of the Bob Hartley Memorial Fellowship Scholarship, will
complete his Master’s Degree in Sports Administration in December 2007
from Mississippi State University. As a graduate assistant in the MSU
Athletic Media Relations office, he has served as the publicist for the
MSU track & field/cross country programs and men's golf team. He also
acted as the sports information contact for the women's tennis squad in
2006.
"I am extremely
excited to be a part of the West Alabama family and I look forward to
working with all of the coaches and student-athletes on campus," Schmidt
said. “I know this will be a great experience for me. I would like to
thank UWA President Dr. Richard Holland, Director of Athletics E.J.
Brophy and others for this opportunity.”
A native of
Starkville, Miss., Schmidt earned his bachelor's degree in the summer of
2005 from MSU in interdisciplinary studies with an emphasis in public
relations and sports communication. While completing his undergraduate
degree he served as a student assistant for the Athletic Media Relations
office, where he first served as the men’s golf contact for two years.
Schmidt has also
gained experience working with the Southeastern Conference during
various events throughout his college life and also volunteering his
services at the 2003 NCAA Division I Baseball Regional, the 2004 NCAA
Division I Women's Golf Championship and the 2006 Nokia Sugar Bowl.
