Rita Higginbotham
Basketball and Softball
(1979-1981)

Rita Higginbotham, a native of Macon, Miss., was the first female inducted into The University of West Alabama Athletic Hall of Fame. Higginbotham was a two-year (’79-’81) starter on the UWA basketball team after transferring from East Mississippi Community College. She led the Tigers to a 49-16 record and had 771 career points and 440 assists. She was an All-State and All-Region pick twice and also played on the first softball team at UWA. Higginbotham coached softball at Mississippi University for Women and won a GSC Championship in 1994. She was a member of the 1990 ASA Class B Slowpitch National Championship Team.

 


Stan Narewski
Track and Field
(1968-1971)

Stan Narewski was a member of the track and field team at West Alabama from 1968-71. Narewski led the Tigers to two Alabama Collegiate Conference crowns. He has served as the head track and field coach at Furman University, Clemson University, Murray State University, Wallace State-Hanceville Community College and was an assistant coach at Auburn University, Kansas University and the University of Florida. Narewski coached over 100 All-Americans on the collegiate level and was named National “Coach of the Year” in 1983 while at Clemson. He served as the head coach for the United States track and field team at the World Championships in Berlin in 1984. Narewski also was the head coach for the United States team in the Paralympics in Barcelona, Spain.
