Fred Hughston played both basketball and baseball for the University of West Alabama from 1953-1957. As a four-year starter in basketball, Hughston averaged 25 points a game for his career, and scored 47 points against Pensacola College in 1956. After graduation he signed with the Syracuse Nationals of the National Basketball Association. Following his professional basketball career, he returned to Alabama as a coach for two years at Carroll High in Ozark. He then moved on to the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind in Talladega.
William R. “Pop” Wagoner was the first person to be awarded letters in three sports from Livingston University following World War II. Wagoner graduated from Livingston in 1949 and received his Master’s degree in 1953 from Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn. He then moved to Florida where he served as head football coach and athletic director at Apalachicola High for 32 years. He recorded 188 wins as a football coach at Apalachicola High and won the State Championship in 1968. He also coached baseball for 31 years and basketball for 20 years. He served on the Florida Athletic Association Board of Directors for 18 years, and received a life membership in that organization for outstanding contributions to Florida’s athletic programs. |
