LIVINGSTON, Ala. —The University of West Alabama’s Mitch Warfield and
Amanda Fuentes have been selected to the Gulf South Conference Fall 2007
All-Academic Team, and UWA placed 29 student-athletes on the GSC Academic
Honor Roll.
Warfield, a junior place kicker on the Tiger football squad,
is a two-time member of the GSC All-Academic Team. The Bay Minette,
Ala.-native ranked third on the team in scoring in 2007, including a
season-long 37-yard field goal against Southern Arkansas. Warfield sports a
cumulative grade point average of 3.50 in biology.
Fuentes, a member of the UWA women’s cross country team, paced the squad
in both the classroom and on the course. The Montgomery, Ala.-product led
the Tigers in every meet this past fall, and turned in a season-best time of
17:24.12 in the 4K Mississippi State Invitational and a 16th-place
finish. She finished 35th at the GSC Championships.
Academic All-GSC Teams are selected by the Gulf South Conference Sports
Information Directors (SID’s) and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FAR’s)
in a joint vote. Nominees must have an overall grade point average of 3.20
or better on a 4.00 scale for their entire academic career. These
student-athletes must also be significant contributors to their respective
squads. Other factors include leadership, community service and
extra-curricular activities.
The Tiger volleyball team placed a league-best 11 student-athletes on the
league’s honor roll. The squad excelled on the court and in the classroom,
posting a 27-6 overall record and earning a spot in the GSC Tournament. Led
by coach Ron Arenz, the Tigers also excelled off the court and turned in an
overall GPA of 3.01. The GSC Honor Roll recognizes every student-athlete
who has achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or better.
