BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of West
Alabama saw 20 student-athletes named to the 2006 Gulf South Conference Fall
Academic Honor Roll, including one member being named to the Fall Academic
All-GSC Team.
“The number one reason you come to college is to get a
degree. Here at the University of West Alabama Department of Athletics we
are committed to academic excellence first, with athletic excellence being a
close second” Director of Athletics E.J. Brophy said. “We had 49
student-athletes make Dean’s List or President’s list this past fall, and we
are very pleased to have so many of our young people win GSC academic honors
as well. Education empowers individuals to succeed long after their athletic
careers are over, and our coaches and administrators emphasize this fact to
our student-athletes every day”.
“This is due in large part to our administration,
faculty and coaches at West Alabama,” said Assistant Athletic Director Wes
Gordon, who is also the academic coordinator for athletics. “We have great
support from the university. It is good to see all the hard work pay off for
West Alabama and its student-athletes.”
The West Alabama cross country teams placed a total of
eight runners on the list. The men’s team was represented by Alex Brown,
Deivid Delgado, Randy Putman, Craig Warlick and Jeremy Wilson, as Devin
Fields, Jillian Gibbs and Debbie Shisler were recognized from the women’s
team.
Four UWA football players received the honor, led by
Mitch Warfield, who was named to the Academic All-GSC Team. Joining Warfield
on the list were Baxter Grisby and Trey Thornhill.
The Tiger volleyball team placed eight student-athletes
on the list. Representing UWA were Taylor Borunda, Teresa Clements, Brittany
Cousin, Jessica Cook, Rachel Hardaway, Rebecca Helms, Jacquie Swan and
Jazlyn Wright.
