LIVINGSTON, Ala. —
The University of West Alabama softball team dropped a
2-1 decision to West Georgia in Gulf South Conference
action on Friday at the UWA Softball Complex. The game
was halted in the seventh when heavy rains blew through the
Livingston area.
UWG (22-20, 3-8 GSC) had a 5-1 lead
with the Tigers coming to bat in the bottom of the
seventh, but due to official rules, the score reverts
back to a complete sixth inning score of 2-1. The two GSC foes played a deadlocked scoreless game until the
sixth when UWG’s Mary York cranked a home run to
left field for the first run of the game. The
Wolves added a run on Paige Hanson’s RBI-single, scoring
Tia Pollack who reached base with a base hit.
The Tigers (21-21,
1-10 GSC) lone run
came off the bat of Angela Smith, who connected on her
third home run of the season in the bottom half of the
frame. The Wetumpka, Ala. native has hit a
round-tripper in three of her last six games. UWA had
scoring chances in previous innings, but could not get a
key hit to post runs early in the game. The Red and
White had the bases loaded in the first with two away
before Smith hit into a fielder’s choice inning-ender.
Freshman Valisha Fincher was in scoring position twice
at second base in the third and fifth. Wolves’
pitcher Kacie Crider went the distance, allowing just five UWA hits
in the affair.
UWA starter Emily
White suffered the loss in the shortened game. White
allowed just one hit until she ran into trouble in the
sixth, allowing two runs off four hits.
