DECATUR, Ala. –
The University of West Alabama softball team opened
the 2008 Gulf South Conference Softball Crossover with a
split at the Wilson Morgan Park complex in Decatur,
Ala. UWA got off to a great start, claiming the opener
3-1 over Southern Arkansas. The Tigers closed out day
one with a 6-1 setback to Arkansas at Monticello.
In the opener, both
squads played scoreless softball until the bottom of the
fourth when the Red and White pushed across two runs in
the inning. Junior shortstop Courtney Gordon led off
the frame with a walk. Angela Smith sliced a double to
left center to score Gordon from first to give the
Tigers the lead. Smith moved into scoring position on a
Lady Mulerider wild pitch and later scored on Monica
Rethwill’s RBI-single. UWA added an insurance run in
the fifth. Laura Bagwell reached on an SAU miscue and
later scored on a Kelli Hartley hit that was misplayed
by SAU.
The three runs
scored by the offensive were enough for UWA starter
Emily White. The junior from Ragland, Ala. picked up
her tenth win of the season after allowing just one run
by SAU in her five innings of work. White allowed two
hits in the opening frame and then settled in and did
not surrender a SAU hit until the fifth inning. Aubree
Hudson earned her first save of the season.
In the night cap,
UAM posted three runs in back-to-back innings and used
great pitching en route to the five-run win over the
Tigers. UWA was held to just four hits in the game.
The lone run came in the bottom of the fourth on a
Cotton Blossom error, scoring Hartley who reached on a
fielder’s choice. Junior Ashley Edgar had the lone
extra base hit in the game with a double in the sixth.
Day two of the annual GSC Crossover gets underway at
Noon for UWA, facing West –leading Henderson State. The
Tigers will also face Christian Brothers at 4 p.m. |
