LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University
of West Alabama softball team moved back into
the chase for a spot in the Gulf South
Conference Tournament with a sweep of West
Georgia on Thursday at the UWA Softball
Complex. UWA run-ruled the Wolves 13-1 in the
opener and claimed a slugfest, 15-8 to complete
the sweep.
With the pair of wins, the
Tigers moved to 11-8 in the GSC East, matching
the Wolves in the conference win-loss column.
UWA moved into a tie for the third position in
the division. The Tigers (39-10) continue GSC
home activity on Saturday April 18, against
nationally ranked Valdosta State. First pitch is
set for Noon.
It was a different
offensive story from last Saturday in
Carrollton, Ga., as UWA lit up the Wolves’
pitching staff for 28 runs off 31 hits on the
day, as opposed to the eight runs on ten hits
last Saturday. UWA upped its home run total to
73 on the season after blasting seven in the
twinbill.
After UWG posted its lone
run of the opening contest in the first, the
Tigers posted 13 unanswered runs en route to the
five-inning game. In UWA’s first at bat, Ashley
Edgar and Lauren Mills drilled back-to-back
homers off UWG starter Haley Dunn to erase the
UWG advantage and cruise to the 12-run victory.
Mills turned in a 6-for-8 day at the dish and
registered six RBIs. The Saskatoon,
Saskatchewan-native added a three-run shot in
UWA’s seven-run fourth and carded her third
round-tripper of the day in her first plate
appearance in the night cap to jumpstart UWA.
Kelli Hartley and Laura Bagwell joined the home
run parade in the opener. Hartley led off the
fourth with her team-best 13th home
run while Bagwell plated three of her six RBIs
on the day with an opposite field shot to right
in the frame. Bagwell finished 3-for-6 in the
double dip, including a pair of extra base hits.
Senior Aubree Hudson picked
up her 14th win of the season after
tossing three innings and allowing just four
hits. After UWG touched her for a run in the
first, Hudson did not allow a Wolve past first.
Brittany McGee finished the shortened contest
with a pair of scoreless frames.
In the second game, UWG
jumped on the board with a three-run first, but
the UWA deficit was erased in the bottom half of
the inning with a six-run first at bat. UWA
sent ten batters to the plate in the frame with
six reaching base with a hit. The frame was
highlighted by Mills’ solo home run, followed by
a pair of doubles and three singles.
The Wolves
took advantage of three Red and White fielding
cues, scoring four unearned runs to take a 7-6
advantage. The Tigers rallied in the second
with three runs to take the 9-7 lead and never
look back. UWG got within a run in the fourth
before UWA expanded the lead to 12-8 with a
three-run homer off the bat of Fincher in the
fourth and a pair of runs in the fifth and one
in the sixth.
