LIVINGSTON,
Ala. – The University of West Alabama
softball team opens the second half of the Gulf
South Conference season on Thursday, April 16,
hosting West Georgia in a key GSC series. First
pitch is set for 3 p.m. at the UWA Softball
Complex.
The two
rivals faced each other this past Saturday in
Carrollton, Ga. as the Wolves bested UWA 8-4 in
the opener and staved off a late Tiger rally in
the second game, 5-4. By virtue of UWG’s two
wins on Saturday against UWA, along with
Valdosta State’s pair of wins over West Florida
on Tuesday, bolstered the Wolves into third
place in the East Division with an 11-6 mark.
The Tigers enter the conference stretch run with
a 37-10 overall mark, 9-8 in league play.
Following Thursday’s affair, UWA will take on
seventh-ranked VSU on Saturday and close out the
2009 home slate with the Argos of West Florida
on Sunday.
UWA
remained in the NCAA South Region poll, released
by the NCAA Softball Committee on Wednesday.
The Tigers dropped two spots from seventh to
ninth in the poll. UAH maintained its No. 1
ranking in both the region and National
Fastpitch Coaches Association’s Top 25
rankings. The GSC is well represented in the
region poll with six of the ten spots. UWG
slipped into the tenth spot, with its 14-game
winning streak.
The Tigers
look to get back on track at the dish after UWG
pitching limited them to just eight runs on ten
hits combined in the twinbill. Entering this
week’s activity, UWA ranks ninth in the nation
in scoring with 7.66 runs scored per contest.
The Red and White is listed eighth in the NCAA
in batting average (.344) and tied for fourth in
total home runs with 66.
