PENSACOLA, Fla.
– West Alabama earned its second-straight
doubleheader split of the weekend with a 10-3 win on the
second game against the University of West Florida in
Pensacola, Fla. on Sunday. UWA split with No. 12
Valdosta State on Saturday. UWF posted a 4-3 win in the
opening contest.
Junior pitcher
Brittany McGee put the finishing touches on a superb
week of pitching for the Demopolis, Ala.-native. McGee
(7-4) pitched her third-straight complete game of the
week in the 10-3 victory at UWF. On Saturday, she
blanked VSU 9-0 and allowed just five hits in the
affair. Last Wednesday, she turned in the program’s
first perfect game in UWA Softball laurels. McGee
received help from the offense as the Tigers pounded out
13 hits in the contest. The 10 runs scored against the
Argos is the most by UWA in the 52-game series with UWF
In the Tiger win,
UWF (38-19, 18-8 GSC) got on the board in the third with
a pair of runs off of Jillian LaFrance’s double to right
field. The Red and White responded in the top of the
fourth to knot the game at 2-2. Freshman centerfielder
Angela Smith got the inning started by reaching base on
a throwing error by the Argo third baseman. UWA got
three consecutive hits in the line up from Monica
Rethwill, Emily White and Kassadie Jones. Rethwill
slapped a single to left field, scoring Smith. White
doubled to right center and scored the tying run Jones’
hit.
UWA (28-26, 6-16
GSC) posted a five spot in the next at-bat, collecting
four hits in the frame. Ashley Edgar led off the inning
with a single followed by a double by Kelli Hartley.
The Tigers took the lead on Valisha Fincher’s RBI-single
to right, plating Edgar. Courtney Gordon picked up an
RBI after a UWF throwing miscue. Smith continued the
string of hits, doubling to left field, scoring Gordon
and Fincher.
The Tigers added
three more runs in the final at-bat with a three-run
home run from Rethwill. It was her fourth of the
season.
After trailing 2-0
in the opener, the UWA bats came alive in the fifth.
White reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a
Jones’ RBI-double to left center to trim the UWF lead to
2-1. The Argos extended the lead to 4-1 after scoring
two in the bottom half of the frame. Fincher brought
the game back to a one-run affair in the sixth with a
two-run home run to center, plating Kelli Hartley, who
reached base via a base hit.
The Tigers close out the road trip on Tuesday, April 22,
with a trip to Birmingham, Ala. to face Birmingham
Southern. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. on the BSC
campus. UWA closes out the season with a pair of Gulf
South Conference match ups against North Alabama and UAH. |
