VALDOSTA, Ga. –
The University of West Alabama softball team gained
a split with 13th-ranked Valdosta State on
Saturday at the VSU Softball Complex. The Lady Blazers
claimed the opener 11-2 but were blanked by the Tigers
9-0 in the finale.
Junior pitcher
Brittany McGee turned in her second shutout performance,
holding VSU to just five hits in the five-inning
contest. Last Wednesday, the Demopolis, Ala.-native
turned in a program-first perfect game against Judson
College. In her last three starts, McGee has allowed
just nine hits and two runs in 15 1/3 innings pitched.
Offensively, the Tigers used the long ball with four
home runs in the affair. Junior first baseman Emily
White connected on home runs in back-to-back at-bats.
White launched one to centerfield in the second inning
and opened the UWA fourth with a solo shot to left
field. Junior shortstop started the scoring with a
two-run dinger in the second. She drove in Valisha
Fincher, who started the frame with a walk.
The Tigers had a
three spot in the third without posting a hit in the
frame. After two outs in the inning, Kelli Hartley
reached via a walk and Fincher was hit by a pitch. The
pair scored on a miscue by the VSU second baseman off
the bat of Gordon. Gordon was plated on an error by the
centerfielder to give UWA a 6-0 cushion. UWA added its
final two runs in the fifth on a two-run round tripper
by centerfielder Angela Smith. Gordon scored on the
play after recording a double.
In the opening
game, the Tigers took a quick 2-0 lead in the first
inning, but VSU evened the game with two runs in the
bottom half of the frame. The Blazers exploded for
eight runs in the second inning. The big blast in the
frame was a grand slam by Kristina Ely.
UWA closes out the
conference weekend on Sunday at West Florida. First
pitch is set for 2 p.m. on the UWF campus. |
