LIVINGSTON,
Ala. – Seventh-ranked Valdosta State spoiled
the University of West Alabama softball team’s
senior day, as VSU topped the Tigers 10-2 and
9-0 in Gulf South Conference action on Saturday
at the UWA Softball Complex.
The GSC
weekend action marks the final appearances for
six Tiger seniors – Laura Bagwell, Ashley Edgar,
Courtney Gordon, Aubree Hudson, Brittany McGee
and Emily White.
VSU (45-6,
19-2 GSC) lived up to its billing as the top
offensive team in the GSC, pounding out 18 hits
off UWA (39-12, 11-10 GSC) pitching, including
three home runs in the opener. VSU spurted out
to a 5-0 lead in its first at bat of the opening
contest and rode the heels of starter Holly
Satterfield en route to the eight-run win.
Satterfield allowed just five UWA hits and a
pair of runs in a complete game performance.
Lauren Mills’ posted her fourth home run in the
last three games with an opposite field round
tripper in the Tigers’ half of the first and
drove in the other UWA run in the third with a
double just inside third base, plating Edgar.
Edgar reached base with a one-out double down
the left field line. Jessica Powell followed
Mills with her second hit of the affair, but
Satterfield pitched around the UWA threat with a
pop up and a strikeout. Satterfield set down
the next 11 Tigers to close out the game.
Alyssa
Shirey’s three-run blast in the first keyed the
five-run first for the Lady Blazers. VSU added a
pair of runs in the third off the long ball.
Kristie Cornell led off the inning with a double
and scored on Stephanie Carlson’s shot over the
centerfield wall. Rebecca Asaman closed out the
scoring for the Lady Blazers with a lead off
solo homer to center.
In the
second game, VSU staked its starter Margaret
Carter a run in the first and three in the
second, as Carter silenced the UWA bats in a
complete game shutout. UWA’s Mills and Kelli
Hartley were the two Tigers that solved Carter
with hits. Carter fanned five and allowed just
one free pass. Mills slapped a single up the
middle in the first and Hartley’s hit started a
modest rally by the Tigers after Valisha Fincher
walked. Carter got Gordon to pop up to the
second baseman to end the inning.
VSU
exploded for five runs in the fifth after
batting through the order and collecting five
hits in the frame. Andi Braswell and Melessa
Jackson registered back-to-back two RBI hits.
UWA returns
to the diamond on Sunday, April, 19, against the
Argonauts of West Florida. First pitch is set
for 1 p.m. at the UWA Softball Complex. Live
stats will be available at athletics.uwa.edu.
