CARROLLTON, Ga.
– Emily White’s ground-rule double in the bottom of
the seventh plated the game-winning run as the
University of West Alabama topped Armstrong Atlantic
State in the first game of the day at the University of
West Georgia Invitational.
The Tigers (4-5)
closed out the two-day event in the same fashion but
this time on the losing end of the ledger. Augusta
State broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the seventh with
a run in the final frame to give ASU the 5-4 win over
UWA.
Against AASU, the
Pirates took the early lead with a run in the opening
frame before the Red and White evened the score at 1-1
in the bottom of the second on Valisha Fincher’s solo
homerun. Fincher led all Tiger hitters, going 3-for-3
in the game. AASU scored three in the fourth inning to
take a 4-1 lead, but the Tigers answered with a run in
the bottom frame of the fourth and scored twice in the
fifth inning to knot the tilt at 4-4. UWA freshman
second baseman Kelli Hartley led off the bottom of the
seventh with her second double of the contest and scored
the game-winning run on White’s two-bagger. Freshman
Kassadie Jones picked up her first career win in a UWA
uniform.
In the second game,
the UWA line up was sparked by Ashley Edgar and
Hartley. Edgar, a junior transfer from Sierra College,
turned in a 2-for-3 performance, including a double and
scored a run. Hartley, the Tuscaloosa, Ala. –product,
finished with two hits and drove in two in the setback.
Junior Brittany McGee scattered three hits in her four
innings of work.
The Tigers return
home for a midweek contest with Mid-Continent on
Tuesday, Feb. 19. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at the
