CARROLLTON, Ga. – The
University of West Alabama softball team closed out the
first day of the West Georgia Invitational on a high
note with an 8-5 win over Georgia Southwestern on
Friday.
UWA got on the board in the top of the third with two
runs and a single run in the four before the Lady Canes
of GSW took a 4-3 lead in their half of the frame. The
Tigers knotted the game at 4-4 in the fifth before
erupting in the sixth with four runs. UWA was led at
the plate by centerfielder Angela Smith and Valisha
Fincher, both going 2-4 in the contest. Smith also
scored twice while Fincher was making her first career
start in a Red and White uniform. As a team, UWA
collected seven hits off of GSW pitching.
Sophomore Amanda Bintz picked up the win in the affair
while junior Brittany McGee was credited with her first
save of the season.
The Tigers started off the day with a 4-1 setback to
Augusta State and dropped a 7-2 decision to pre-season
ranked No. 3 Columbus State in the afternoon session.
The Jaguars of ASU surrendered just one UWA hit, a
double by Monica Rethwill in the top of the fifth.
Rethwill scored on a sacrifice fly by Kassadie Jones.
Against CSU, the Red and White took an early 1-0 lead
with a run in the bottom of the first, but the Cougars
erased the deficit with a three-spot in the second. CSU
plated two runs in the fifth and sixth to take a 7-1
lead into the sixth. The Tigers scored in their half of
the inning to trim the deficit to the final score of
7-2.
The Tigers close out play at the UWG Invitational taking
on ASU and Armstrong Atlantic State.
