Live Stats

LIVINGSTON, Ala. –  The University of West Alabama softball team will unveil the 2009 season this weekend, Feb. 13-14, hosting the UWA Invitational at the UWA Softball Complex.

All games will be available through live stats at athletics.uwa.edu.

In-state programs Judson College and Spring Hill College will converge in Livingston along with the Tigers.  The Eagles of JC and Badgers of SHC will get things started on Friday, Feb. 13 at Noon.  The Tigers will take the field against JC at 2 p.m. followed by a 4 p.m. contest against SHC.  On Saturday, JC and SHC will square off in the opening game of the day at 11 a.m., followed by UWA taking on SHC and JC to close out the Valentine’s Day activity.  Game times for the UWA match ups on Saturday are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively.

The Tigers are coming off a 29-29 overall mark in 2008 and under the guidance of second-year head coach Will Atkinson returns nine position players from a season ago.  UWA, picked to finish fifth in the GSC by a vote of the division coaches, returns seven All-GSC performers from a season ago.  A trio of Tigers claimed pre-season All-GSC East honors, led by senior shortstop Courtney Gordon.  Sophomores Valisha Fincher and Kelli Hartley also made the list.  Gordon, from Columbus, Miss., led UWA at the dish with a .385 batting average and was one of seven Tigers selected to the 2008 All-GSC Team.  Gordon was tops on the team in hits and finished fifth in the league in average.  Fincher finished her rookie season with a .341 batting average from the left side of the plate and led the squad in stolen bases with 13.  The Tarrant, Ala.-product delivered eight home runs on the season.  Hartley paced the Red and White line up with 13 home runs, shattering the UWA freshman record for round-trippers in a rookie campaign.  Started all 58 games at second base, the Northport, Ala.-native, finished second on the squad in hits with 62, 25 of those were for extra bases.

Spring Hill (1-2), a NAIA foe from Mobile, Ala., opened the 2009 campaign last weekend in Thomasville, Ga. and came away with a win over Savannah College of Art and Design and a pair of setbacks to Thomas University.

Following this weekend’s season-opening action, UWA will face Miles College in a mid-week doubleheader on Tuesday, Feb. 17 in Fairfield, Ala. before taking part in the UAH Chillout in Decatur, Ala. on Feb. 20-22.
