LIVINGSTON, Ala.
– The University of West Alabama softball team will
unveil the 2009 season this weekend, Feb. 13-14, hosting
the UWA Invitational at the UWA Softball Complex.
All games will be
available through live stats at athletics.uwa.edu.
In-state programs
Judson College and Spring Hill College will converge in
Livingston along with the Tigers. The Eagles of JC and
Badgers of SHC will get things started on Friday, Feb.
13 at Noon. The Tigers will take the field against JC
at 2 p.m. followed by a 4 p.m. contest against SHC. On
Saturday, JC and SHC will square off in the opening game
of the day at 11 a.m., followed by UWA taking on SHC and
JC to close out the Valentine’s Day activity. Game
times for the UWA match ups on Saturday are 1 p.m. and 3
p.m. respectively.
The Tigers are
coming off a 29-29 overall mark in 2008 and under the
guidance of second-year head coach Will Atkinson returns
nine position players from a season ago. UWA, picked to
finish fifth in the GSC by a vote of the division
coaches, returns seven All-GSC performers from a season
ago. A trio of Tigers claimed pre-season All-GSC East
honors, led by senior shortstop Courtney Gordon.
Sophomores Valisha Fincher and Kelli Hartley also made
the list. Gordon, from Columbus, Miss., led UWA at the
dish with a .385 batting average and was one of seven
Tigers selected to the 2008 All-GSC Team. Gordon was
tops on the team in hits and finished fifth in the
league in average. Fincher finished her rookie season
with a .341 batting average from the left side of the
plate and led the squad in stolen bases with 13. The
Tarrant, Ala.-product delivered eight home runs on the
season. Hartley paced the Red and White line up with 13
home runs, shattering the UWA freshman record for
round-trippers in a rookie campaign. Started all 58
games at second base, the Northport, Ala.-native,
finished second on the squad in hits with 62, 25 of
those were for extra bases.
Spring Hill (1-2),
a NAIA foe from Mobile, Ala., opened the 2009 campaign
last weekend in Thomasville, Ga. and came away with a
win over Savannah College of Art and Design and a pair
of setbacks to Thomas University.
Following this
weekend’s season-opening action, UWA will face Miles
College in a mid-week doubleheader on Tuesday, Feb. 17
in Fairfield, Ala. before taking part in the UAH
Chillout in Decatur, Ala. on Feb. 20-22.
