LIVINGSTON, Ala.
- The University of West Alabama softball team dropped
the opening game of the doubleheader with in-state foe
North Alabama
3-1, but the rains came after four innings of play in
the night cap and
the contest was canceled with UNA leading 10-3. The
Tigers will close
out the season on Sunday with a duel with 2nd-ranked
Alabama in
Huntsville at 3 p.m.
The second game on Saturday does not count in the record
book because it
did not reach the complete five innings to count in the
ledger. This
marks the second time this season that weather has
caused a stoppage in
a UWA contest. West Georgia topped the Tigers in a
rain-shortened
affair.
In the opener, the Tigers struck first with a run in the
fifth inning.
Junior Emily White led off the frame with a single to
right field. Mary
Wright, who pinch ran for White, scored on Junior Laura
Bagwell's double
to left center. White led all UWA hitters at the plate
two hits. Her
second hit of the contest was a double in the seventh.
The Ragland,
Ala-native was in the circle for four innings and
allowed just two Lion
hits in the outing.
Aubree Hudson came in relief of White in the fifth and
pitched around
trouble after surrendering a lead off single. UNA
scored three runs in
the sixth on three base hits. Andrea Palmer started the
inning with a
double down the right field line. After a sacrifice
bunt pushed Palmer
to third, Kendall Miller's RBI-single scored the
game-tying run. Kim
Lee reached via a base hit up the middle followed by
Lindsey Greene's
bases-clearing double to give the Purple and Gold the
two-run advantage.
UNA starter Megan Niesel went the distance and allowed
just five UWA
hits in the contest.
