DECATUR, Ala. –
The University of West Alabama softball team
finished the UAH Charger Chillout with two setbacks on
Sunday, falling 2-1 to Kentucky Wesleyan and suffering a
6-2 loss in the finale against Southern Indiana.
UWA (8-8) closed
out the weekend activity with a 2-2 mark, notching two
wins on Saturday against Indianapolis and Truman State.
The 22-team tournament was shortened due to weather on
Friday.
In the one-run
setback to KWC, the Tigers got behind on the scoreboard
in the fourth inning with KWC plating two runs in the
frame and proved to be enough to secure the win over the
Red and White. UWA’s lone run came in the bottom of the
sixth on an RBI by junior shortstop Courtney Gordon.
Gordon scored Valisha Fincher on a single thru the left
side of the infield. The Columbus, Miss-native was one
of two Tigers to record multiple hits in the setback.
Junior pitcher Emily White had two hits in the contest.
White pitched a complete game, but suffered the loss in
the circle. Junior catcher Ashley Edgar picked up the
fifth hit in the contest for UWA. KWC’s Haleigh
Ashworth stymied the Tiger line up, throwing six
complete innings and striking out five in her outing.
USI scored four
runs in the first three innings en route to the 6-2
win. UWA posted two runs in the bottom of the fifth,
but that was all that USI starter Amy Harrison would
give up. Harrison tossed a four-hit complete game,
striking out eight Tigers in the outing. Junior Laura
Bagwell, Edgar, White, Gordon and Krista Merrifield were
the four Tigers to reach base by way of a hit. Freshman
Kelli Hartley was credited with an RBI with an Eagle
miscue. White drove in Bagwell, who reached base
courtesy of a walk, with a sacrifice fly to center.
The Tigers return home next weekend
to host the 2008 Tiger Invitational on Friday, Feb. 29
and Saturday, March 1. Two teams from Memphis, Tenn.
will venture to Livingston to round out the tri-team
field. Crichton and Gulf South Conference foe Christian
Brothers will join UWA in the event. UWA will face
Crichton at 2 p.m. on Friday. Saturday’s activity will
be apart of Super Tiger Day activities on the UWA
campus.
