LIVINGSTON, Ala. —The
University of West Alabama softball team pounded out 26
hits combined, including six home runs en route to wins
over Crichton and Christian Brothers to close out the
2008 Tiger Invitational with four wins on the weekend.
The Tigers (12-8) topped the Comets of CC 12-7 in the
first game of the day and turned away the Lady Bucs of
CBU 13-11.
UWA scored six runs in
one inning in each of the two contests to help its cause
in the two wins. Against Crichton, the Red and White
plated six runs in the fifth inning to overtake the lead
6-5 over the Black and Silver Comets. Junior Emily
White plated two runs with a single, scoring Monica
Rethwill and Valisha Fincher, who reached by way of a
single and double respectively. Centerfield Angela
Smith also connected for a double in the frame and
registered two RBI. Ashley Edgar also knocked a run in
with a single. Junior shortstop Courtney Gordon
connected on her second home run of the season with a
two-run round-tripper in the second inning. Fincher hit
a towering three-run dinger to center field in the
Tiger’s third at-bat. Junior Aubree Hudson limited CC’s
bats, coming in picking up her second win of the
season. Hudson scattered three hits and punched out
three in her five innings of relief work.
In the nightcap, the
Tigers scratched the board with three runs in the
opening frame, but would relinquish the lead in the top

give the Red and White 5-4 lead. The Lady Bucs re-took
control of the game with a three-run fourth inning. In
the UWA fourth, Gordon hit her second home run of the
day to start the inning followed by a Laura Bawell
single. Edgar and Hartley walked to load up the bases
for Rethwill’s grand slam. Fincher slapped her second
home run of the day to close out the scoring in the
frame. UWA added insurance runs in its half of the
sixth with Harley’s team-leading seventh home run of the
season. She is one run dinger away from setting the
freshman mark for home runs as a rookie. CBU closed the
gap in the top of the seventh, down 13-8, with a
three-spot in the final at-bat. White picked up the win
for the Tigers and Brittany McGee earned her second save
