Live Stats

LIVINGSTON, Ala. — The University of West Alabama softball team got off to a great start in the 2008 Tiger Invitational with a sweep of Crichton College on Friday at the UWA Softball Complex.  UWA topped the Comets 10-3 in the opener and ousted CC 14-1 in the nightcap.

In the opener, the Red and White got on the board in the bottom of the first with a lead off home run by junior third baseman Laura Bagwell, but the Comets knotted the game at 1-1 in the top of the second with an RBI by Brittany Enochs.  Crichton would take its only lead of the day in the fourth with an unearned run after a UWA fielding miscue.  The Tigers responded with nine runs over the next three frames to secure their ninth win of the season.  In the fifth, UWA punched out six hits and plated four runs to break open the game.  Junior Emily White registered two RBI with a single up the middle, scoring Valisha Fincher and Ashley Edgar, who reached by base hits in the inning.  Freshman Kelli Hartley had and Fincher each recorded doubles in the affair.  UWA had three players in the line up with multiple hit, including Bagwell’s 3-for-4 performance.  White  picked up her fourth win of the season in the circle, with a five strike out performance in her three innings of work.

In the nightcap, UWA scored 12 runs in the first three innings to cruise to the 13-run win over CC.  The Red and White, who were the visitors in the second game, got off to a great start, plating two runs in the opening frame.  Hartley got the ball rolling with a two-out triple in the first and later scored on Fincher’s single.  Fincher, a native of Tarrant, Ala. had the big hit in the Tiger’s second with a home run to left center, scoring Hartley, who reached by way of double down the left field line.  UWA turned in seven hits in the inning.  Junior pitcher Brittany McGee held down the Comet bats with a three-inning outing, allowing just one run.  Sophomore catcher Jennifer Lillard was credited with a three hits in the affair.

UWA and Crichton open the second day of the Tiger Invitational at Noon.  The Comets will square off with Gulf South Conference foe Christian Brothers at 2 p.m.  The Tigers and the Lady Bucs of CBU are scheduled to conclude the event with a 4 p.m. tilt.
