HUNTSVILLE, Ala.
– West Alabama’s bid to knock off the nation’s
top-ranked team fell short as the Tigers dropped a pair
of hard-fought contests to Alabama in Huntsville in
softball action. UWA fell 4-3 in the opener, with the
Chargers plating the game-winner the seventh in the
opener along with UAH overcoming a 2-1 deficit to claim
game two 6-3.
In the opener, UAH
(34-5, 5-3 GSC) took an early 1-0 lead after two
complete innings. The Red and White bats got rolling
with a three-run fourth. Freshman centerfielder Angela
Smith opened with a single followed by junior Emily
White’s base hit. Freshman Kassadie connected on her
first collegiate home run with a three-run round
tripper, plating Smith and White and giving UWA (19-18,
1-7) a 3-1 lead after four at-bats. UAH responded with
a run and the bottom half of the frame. The Chargers
knotted the game at 3-3 on Krystal Johnson’s solo shot
in the sixth. UAH posted the game-winning run in the
final inning after Kristina Prater reached base with a
single. She later crossed the plate on an Amy Harris
base hit.
UWA scored a run in
each of the first two innings in game two while UAH
plated a run in the opening frame. The Tiger’s one-run
lead would hold up until the Chargers exploded for five
runs in the fifth. The Charger inning was highlighted
by Marilyn Cooper three-run blast to give UAH a 6-2 lead
after four innings. UWA’s final run of the affair came
off the bat of Smith, who connected on her first home
run of the season in the seventh.
UWA returns to
action on Sunday, March 30, closing out its spring break
road trip against in-state rival North Alabama. First
pitch is set for 2 p.m. on the UNA campus. The Tigers
return home on Wednesday, April 2 with a doubleheader
with Judson College.
