UWA Softball Powers Past Stillman

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball team snapped its three-game losing skid after combining for 35 runs in a two-game sweep of Stillman College on Tuesday.  The Tigers blanked SC 18-0 in the first game and routed the Blue and Gold Tigers, 17-2 in the night cap.

In the opener, UWA (27-5) pounded out 17 hits along with a complete game shut out by senior Aubree Hudson.  The Tigers gave Hudson a four-run cushion to start with after posting four runs in their first plate appearance.  Hudson scattered four hits and fanned six in the five inning contest.  The Tigers took control of the game in the third with an 11 spot. Sophomore Kelli Hartley ignited the inning with a solo home run to left field that began a seven-hit barrage in the frame.  She also posted a double in her second at-bat of the inning.  The Northport, Ala.-native drove in four runs and scored three runs. Along with four base hits in the inning, UWA took advantage of two walks and a SC error.  Lauren Mills finished off the scoring in the inning with a three-run blast to left field.  The Tigers added three runs in the fifth to expand the lead.  Mills drilled her second extra base hit of the affair and scored on Jennifer Lillard’s two-run double.  Four Tigers finished with multiple hits – Laura Bagwell, Hartley, Mills and Lillard.

UWA wasted no time taking control of the second contest, as it strung together nine hits and posted ten runs in the first at bat to cruise to the double-digit win.  A pair of doubles from Ashley Edgar and Laura Bagwell began the frame in which 15 Tigers went to the dish.  Edgar blasted her second two-bagger of the inning, driving in a pair of runs.  She finished the contest 3-for-3 and three runs scored.  Jessica Powell added a two-run double in the UWA hit parade.  UWA posted four runs in the second and tallied three in the third.  The Red and White turned in a 16-hit performance along with a complete game outing from Jessica Cervantes in the circle.  Cervantes gave up a pair of runs, only one earned in the contest.  She finished with five punch outs and faced just three batters over the minimum.

UWA welcomes North Alabama and No. 2 UAH to the UWA Softball complex on Saturday, March 28 and Sunday March 29.  The UNA two-game set will be apart of Super Tiger Day festivities on the UWA campus.  First pitch is set for 3 p.m.  Live stats will be available at athletics.uwa.edu.
