LIVINGSTON, Ala.
– After posting a 3-0 start to the season at home
this past weekend, the University of West Alabama
softball team will begin a 19-game hiatus away from
the UWA Softball Complex on Tuesday, Feb. 17,
traveling to Fairfield, Ala. to face in-state foe
Miles College. First Pitch is set for 1 p.m. at
Glen-Oaks Park.
The Tigers opened the
season with a 6-5 win over Spring Hill College,
followed by pair of convincing wins over SHC, 11-2
and Judson College, 12-2 on Saturday in the UWA
Invitational. With the 3-0 start, UWA is off to its
best start since 1995 when the Red and White opened
the season with four straight wins.
Senior catcher Ashley
Edgar started the season strong, finishing the
weekend 5-for-8 and drove in three runs. The
Roseville, Calif.-native posted a slugging
percentage of .625 for the opening weekend along
with an on base mark of .700. Defensively, Edgar
stifled two SHC opportunities with a pair of pick
offs in the contest. Senior Laura Bagwell and
sophomore Kelli Hartley lead the team in runs batted
in with six each. In the circle, senior Brittany
McGee turned in a complete game in UWA’s 11-2 win
over SHC. Dating back to her perfect game on Apr.
16, 2008 against Judson College, McGee has posted
four complete games, including a shut out of
Valdosta State (April 19, 2008). In the 29.2
innings pitched since the feat, she has given up
just 21 hits and six earned runs.
Following Tuesday’s
mid-week affair with the Golden Bears of MC, UWA
will take part in the annual UAH Chillout in
Decatur, Ala. this weekend. The Tigers will face
Southern Indiana at 10 a.m. on Friday, followed by a
match up against Northern Kentucky at Noon.
The
Red and White return to the UWA Softball Complex on
Monday, March 9, hosting Lambuth University.
