LIVINGSTON, Ala. —The
University of West Alabama softball team cruised to a
sweep of Mid-Continent University on Tuesday at the UWA
Softball Complex, topping the Lady Cougars 13-1 in the
first game and claiming a 16-0 win in the nightcap.
The Tigers (6-6) used a 12-hit attack
in the fist game and colleted 16 in the second against
MCU (2-4) pitching. UWA plated nine runs in its second
at-bat in the opener after two outs were recorded in the
book. Senior Krista Merrifield got the hit-attack going
with a single to right field. The frame was highlighted
by freshman second baseman Kelli Hartley’s three-run
blast to right field. The Tuscaloosa, Ala.-product
finished day with three hits and five RBI along with a
team-high four runs scored. The Red and White added
four more runs in the third. Junior first baseman
Monica Rethwill plated two runs with a two-bagger in the
frame.
Junior Emily White picked up her
third win of the season with a complete game, six
strikeout outing. White sat down the first ten Lady
Cougar batters before giving up a hit in the top of the
fourth. At the plate, the Ragland, Ala.-native, was
credited with two hits and three RBI.
In the nightcap, UWA’s Aubree Hudson
pitched a five-inning shutout, allowing just two hits by
MCU. Hudson pitched her way out of trouble in the
second frame with the Lady Cougars threatening to score
the game’s first runs. A lead off single and a walk
gave MCU life, but Hudson fought back to strikeout the
side after the bases were jammed with Lady Cougars. The
Red and White scratched the scoreboard with a four-run
second. UWA turned in four runs on four singles and a
miscue by MCU. Laura Bagwell’s single to left scored
Mary Wright and Jennifer Lillard, who reached by-way of
singles.
The Tiger bats exploited MCU pitching
in the fourth with a ten spot in the frame. The inning
started with doubles by Rethwill and White. Junior
shortstop Courtney Gordon carded her first career
homerun with a shot over the right centerfield fence.
As a team, UWA collected nine hits in the frame.
UWA returns to the tournament circuit
this weekend, traveling to Huntsville for the UAH
Charger Chillout. The Tigers will open the event on
Friday, Feb. 22, at 2 p.m. against Bellarmine and face
Northern Kentucky at 4 p.m.
