UWA Sweeps Lambuth To Open Spring Break Trip

JACKSON, Tenn. – The University of West Alabama softball team extended its season-best winning streak to eight games with a sweep of Lambuth University on Tuesday.  The Tigers topped the Eagles 9-4 in the first game and pounded out a 13-2 win in the night cap.

UWA moved to 22-2 on the season and finished off a season-sweep of LU after taking a pair of games over the Eagles in Livingston.

In both games, the Tigers played catch up with the Eagles.  LU jumped out to a 4-0 lead over UWA after two innings before the Tiger bats strung together seven runs in the top half of the fourth.  The Red and White batted around in the inning.  Sophomore Valisha Fincher posted two of her three hits in the frame.  She led the ballclub at the dish with her three hits.  Laura Bagwell and Jessica Powell each recorded multi-hits in the five-run win.  Junior Lauren Mills connected on her fourth home run of the season in the contest.  It was the third-straight game for the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan-native with a round tripper.  UWA added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth to extend the lead to 9-4.

Senior Brittany McGee picked up her ninth win of the season after coming in relief of UWA starter, Aubree Hudson.  The Demopolis, Ala-product tossed four scoreless innings and posted a strikeout.  Hudson registered five punch outs in her outing.

After scratching the scoreboard with a run in its first at bat in the second contest, UWA found itself trailing 2-1 after the first inning with a two-run bottom half by LU.  The Tigers bats exploded in the third and fourth innings with back-to-back six spots en route to the run-rule win in the night cap.  Senior catcher Ashley Edgar reached base all four trips to the base, including a home run in the contest.  Edger was also credited with a walk and a hit by pitch.  Her home run sparked the Tigers’ six-run third along with a pair of doubles.  Kelli Hartley carded a pair of hits along with Fincher’s two base knocks.  In the circle, Jessica Cervantes pushed her record to 4-0 with her two innings of work.

UWA continues its spring holiday road trip with a visit to the capital city of Montgomery, Ala. to face the Hawks of Huntingdon College on Thursday, March 19.  First pitch is set for 2 p.m.  UWA opens the Gulf South Conference slate on Saturday, March 21 at Valdosta State.
