CARROLLTON,
Ga. – A five-run outburst in the sixth propelled
the University of West Alabama softball team to a
5-3 win over Florida Southern in the final game of
the 2009 Wolves Invitational on Saturday. Earlier
in the day, UWA edged Georgia Southwestern, 3-2.
With the sweep,
the Tigers moved to 16-2 on the season after going
4-1 during the University of West Georgia-hosted
event.
FSC starter
Morgan Brown quieted the UWA bats through five
innings, allowing just one Tiger hit in the first
five frames before running into trouble in UWA’s
scoring onslaught in the sixth. Senior Laura
Bagwell was the lone Tiger to post a hit against
Brown before the sixth. Senior catcher Ashley Edgar
started the five-run sixth with a single down the
right field line. After a sacrifice bunt by Bagwell
and a FSC fielding miscue off the bat of Jessica
Powell, sophomore Kelli Hartley doubled to right
center, scoring UWA’s fist two runs of the inning.
Valisha Fincher followed with a single, plating the
game-tying run. Senior Emily White drove in the
go-ahead run with a single to the right side.
Senior Courtney Gordon scored on a wild pitch to
close out the scoring for UWA.
Senior Brittany
McGee moved to 5-1 on the season after tossing three
innings and allowed just two hits in the outing.
Junior Jessica Cervantes earned her third save of
the weekend after closing out the Mocs in the
seventh. FSC had the tying run at second base, but
Cervantes struck out back-to-back Mocs to end the
game.
Against GSW,
the Tigers rallied in the third and fourth innings,
tying the game at 2-2 in the third and pushing
across the winning run in the fourth. Sophomore
Angela Smith scored UWA’s first run of the contest
after reaching base via a base hit. Smith drove in
Gordon with a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Edgar
scored the tying run in the third.
In the circle,
Aubree Hudson, McGee and Cervantes allowed just six
Hurricanes’ hits. Hudson pitched the first four
frames to gain the win, while Cervantes picked up a
save.
UWA returns home for a six-game
homestand, beginning on Monday, March 9, hosting
Lambuth University. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
The Tigers will battle Miles College on Thursday
before opening Gulf South Conference play on Friday
against UWG.
