DECATUR, Ala. –
The University of West Alabama softball team dropped
a 3-2 decision to Henderson State to begin Friday’s
competition at the 2008 Gulf South Conference Crossover
at Wilson Morgan Park in Decatur, Ala. UWA’s second
game of the day with Christian Brothers was rained out
after heavy rain storms and tornado warnings in the area
that halted play for the day.
The Tigers were
able to finish the contest with HSU minutes before
strong storms moved into the Decatur area, canceling
play for the rest of the day. UWA jumped on the board
in the opening at bat with two runs scored on two pass
balls by Lady Reddie catcher Jennifer Lyon. Junior
Laura Bagwell led off the game with a walk and scored
the game’s first run. Freshman Valisha Fincher slapped
a single to the right side and then moved to third on
Angela Smith’s base hit to left field. Fincher crossed
the plate on Lyon’s second miscue of the frame. HSU
scratched the board for a run in the bottom of the
second. Kayla Lucas led off the inning with a bunt
single and scored on Jessica Lynn’s RBI-single to left
field. HSU threatened for more in the frame, but UWA
starter Emily White got a strike out and pop up to end
the inning. The Lady Reddies took the lead in the
fourth, scoring two runs off UWA’s Monica Rethwill. A
Lynn lead off walk issued by Hudson later scored on a
fielder’s choice even the game at 2-2. HSU plated the
go-ahead run on a Kelcie Glidden sacrifice fly, scoring
Lynn.
UWA and Delta state
will do battle on Saturday, April 12, at Noon. The DSU
game will be the Tigers only game of the day. The Red
and White close out the GSC Crossover on Sunday with
Ouachita Baptist and Arkansas Tech. |
