UWA's McGee Tosses Perfect Game; Tigers Sweep Judson

MARION, Ala. – University of West Alabama junior pitcher Brittany McGee pitched the program’s first perfect game in the second game of the Tigers' sweep of Judson College on Wednesday.  UWA topped JC 9-2 in the opening game and blanked the Eagles 14-0 in five innings in the night cap.

McGee, from Demopolis, Ala., faced the minimum (15) in the five-inning affair.  She allowed just one ball to leave the infield.  The Eagles only threat to get a hit was thwarted when Mary Wright threw the runner out at first from right field.  The perfect game by McGee is the first one recorded in the books since 2005.  Former UWA pitcher Casey Cockrum (2004-05) tossed seven innings of no-hit softball in a 1-0 win at Belhaven.  It marks the ninth no-no in UWA softball laurels.

McGee received help from the offense, as the Red and White pounded out 19 hits in the contest.  UWA exploded for eight runs in the seventh to seal the shortened game.  Four Tigers turned in multiple hit performances, led by freshman centerfielder Angela Smith with a 4-for-4 game.  The Wetumpka, Ala.-product plated four runs and registered a double.  Junior Laura Bagwell was credited with three hits, including a two-bagger and her fifth home run of the season.  Junior shortstop Courtney Gordon finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a trio of RBIs.

In the first game, UWA scored seven runs in the final two frames to post the seven-run victory.  Tiger starter Emily White picked up her 12th win of the season after throwing five innings and scattering six Eagle hits.  She struck out three in the outing and allowed two runs.  Aubree Hudson finished up the final two frames, striking out a pair and did not allow a JC hit.  Catcher Ashley Edgar was credited with two RBIs and scored a run along with three hits.  Freshman Kelli Hartley also had three hits, two of which drove in runs.  Wright and Kassadie Jones produced multiple hit performances in the opener.  Jones had two RBIs and double while Wright scored two runs.  Bagwell and Gordon added a triple each in the non-conference win.

UWA returns to Gulf South Conference action this weekend, traveling to 12th-ranked Valdosta State on Saturday, April 19, and then on to Pensacola, Fla. to face West Florida on Sunday, April 20.  First pitch at VSU is set for 11 a.m. CST.
