LIVINGSTON, Ala. —
The University of West Alabama softball team will travel
to Decatur, Ala. on Thursday to begin activity in the
2008 Gulf South Conference Softball Crossover held at
Decatur’s Wilson Morgan Park.
The Tigers (21-21,
1-10 GSC) will open the four-day event with a 4 p.m.
tilt with Southern Arkansas (7-21, 2-14 GSC) followed by
a match up with the Cotton Blossoms of Arkansas at
Monticello at 6 p.m. On Friday, the Red and White will
face GSC West-leading Henderson State (33-9, 13-3 GSC)
at Noon and close out the day with Christian Brothers
(14-20, 1-15 GSC). UWA topped CBU earlier in the season
13-11 in the Tiger Invitational in Livingston. The
Tigers only play once on Saturday, squaring off with
Delta State (26-19, 12-6 GSC) at Noon. UWA closes out
the annual event on Sunday with a 10:00 a.m. affair with
Arkansas Tech (31-9, 13-3 GSC) and closes out the
weekend against Ouachita Baptist (18-23, 7-9 GSC). UWA
and OBU opened the season in the UWA Invitational with
the two squads splitting the match ups. All games in
the crossover count in the league standings.
UWA ranks fourth in
the GSC in batting average with a .315 clip. That
average ranks 39th in the nation in the
latest NCAA statistical listings. Junior shortstop
Courtney Gordon continues to lead the Tiger line up with
a .455 batting mark. The Columbus, Miss.-product ranks
second in the GSC with her at the plate average. Her
team-leading 56 hits rank her fourth in the conference.
The Meridian Community College transfer has an on base
percentage of .504. As a team, UWA is averaging 5.91
runs per contest which ranks 30th in the
NCAA.
