UWA's Fincher Earns GSC Weekly Honor

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – West Alabama freshman outfielder Valisha Fincher has been selected as this week’s Gulf South Conference Softball Player of the Week, announced by the league on Tuesday.

Fincher sported an astounding .727 batting average in this past weekend’s Tiger Invitational at the UWA Softball Complex.  The Tarrant, Ala.-native turned in eight hits in 11 at bats on the weekend, six of which were extra base hits.  She belted three home runs and three doubles in the Tiger’s four-game sweep over the weekend.  Fincher drove in eight runs in the two-day tournament, including back-to-back three RBI performances against Crichton.  She also swiped four bases for the week and carded a slugging percentage of 1.818 and an on-base mark of .769.

Fincher helped pace the UWA offense as the squad pounded out 55 hits over the weekend and posted double-figure runs in all four affairs.  The Red and White scored 49 runs on the weekend, averaging 12.25 runs per contest.  The run total is the most runs scored over a four-game span since the 1992 season.

UWA returns to the softball diamond on this weekend, taking part in the Clark Atlanta Invitational in Atlanta, Ga. The Tigers will face Rollins, Barry and Nova Southeastern on the invitational’s opening day.
