DECATUR, Ala. —
The University of West Alabama softball team dropped
its second one-run game of the 2008 Gulf South
Conference Softball Crossover with a 2-1 setback to
Delta State on Saturday at Wilson Morgan Park in
Decatur, Ala.
The one-run loss to
the Lady Statesmen was the eighth of the season in which
the Tigers have fallen by one run to the opposition.
UWA’s (22-24, 2-14 GSC) Ashley Edgar broke the scoreless
tie in the bottom of the third with a solo home run to
left field. The Red and White had another scoring
opportunity in the next frame after freshman
centerfielder Angela Smith led off with a single up the
middle. Kelli Hartley put down the sacrifice bunt to
move Smith into scoring position. After Smith moved to
third on a pass ball, she was left stranded at third
after DSU starter Sam St. Hilaire closed out the inning
with a line out and a foul pop up. UWA had its final
scoring opportunity in its final at bat. Junior
shortstop Courtney Gordon, who reached via a walk was
stranded at third with two outs when the game ended.
DSU (28-20, 14-7
GSC) knotted the game at 1-1 in the fifth and plated the
game-winning run in the sixth inning. The Green and
White took advantage of a lead off hit by pitch by UWA
starter Emily White. The miscue came back to haunt the
Tigers as St. Hilaire her cause by slapping a single up
the middle. The following inning, the Lady Statesmen
got the lead off hitter on base. Brittany Tillery laced
a double off UWA reliever Aubree Hudson to start the
sixth. She later scored on a fielder’s choice by
Courtney Clark.
White pitched an
outstanding five innings, posting a season-high eight
strikeouts in the scorebook and gave up just four hits
in the outing.
UWA closes out the GSC Crossover on
Sunday, April, 13, taking on Arkansas Tech at 10 a.m.
and Ouachita Baptist at Noon. Both games can be
