LIVINGSTON, Ala.
– The University of West
Alabama softball team dropped a pair
of Gulf South Conference games
Sunday afternoon, losing 6-0 and 8-0
to No. 12 Valdosta State at the UWA
Softball Complex.
In the opener,
Emily White (8-9) gave up six runs
(four earned) on eight hits with
seven strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings to
take the loss. Brittany McGee worked
2 1/3 innings with three strikeouts.
The Lady
Blazers couldn’t get anything going
against White during the first four
innings, stranding seven runners,
but Valdosta State broke through in
the fifth inning by scoring six runs
on six hits.
Telicia Ramsey
opened the fifth with a bunt single,
but was thrown out at second on a
fielder’s choice by Alexandra
Acosta. With one out, Robin Williams
singled up the middle and Amy Gaiss
followed with an infield hit to load
the bases. With two outs Kristina
Ely doubled to left-center, scoring
a pair of runs.
Chantrele
Edwards walked and Rebecca Aszman
doubled to left-center, scoring
Shannon Cleland, who reached on a
fielder’s choice and Ely. After a
pitching change, Brianna Collis
reached on an error by Tiger
shortstop Sheila Jordan, scoring
Edwards. The final run came when
Ramsey singled through the left
side, plating Aszman.
Kristen Lindsey
(10-1) pitched seven innings for
Valdosta State, with a pair of
strikeouts and allowed just one hit
– a Jordan base hit in the seventh
inning.
Aubree Hudson
(9-8) started the second game,
pitching 3 2/3 innings for the
Tigers. She gave up seven runs (six
earned) on eight hits with three
strikeouts. McGee pitched in relief,
finishing with a strikeout in 1 1/3
innings of work.
West Alabama
(21-20 overall, 1-7 GSC) had one
base runner – Alisha Berry, who led
off the third inning with a walk,
but was stranded on base as the
Tigers failed to get a hit.
The Lady
Blazers (23-3, 6-0) scored a run in
the third, six in the fourth and one
in the sixth to finish with eight
runs on 10 hits.
Brianna Collis
(7-0) pitched five innings, with a
walk and three strikeouts to pick up
the win for Valdosta State.
West Alabama
returns to action 1:00 p.m. Friday,
March 30 in Carrollton, Ga., to take
on West Georgia in a key Gulf South
Conference Eastern Division series. |
